The world has changed. There used to be a clear distinction between B2B and B2C. Today? Today, the very same CEO who makes decisions on a budget of millions checks their emails at the breakfast table, straight after scrolling through Instagram.
The harsh truth for anyone who still thinks in terms of ‘walls of text’: the average attention span in the digital world is 8 seconds. That’s the fine line that determines whether you make it or not. We live in an ‘always-on’ world, where we use our smartphones on average 144 times a day check. We are no longer just readers; we are scanners, filterers and split-second decision-makers.
Anyone who wants to succeed in the B2B market today must understand that ‘business-to-business’ ultimately always comes down to ‘human-to-human’. And that person has no time to waste.
The daily marathon: 90 metres of scrolling
Imagine climbing Big Ben every day. Sounds tiring? That’s exactly what your customers do with their thumbs every day. On average, we scroll 90 metres a day through feeds, websites and documents.
Faced with this endless stream of information, our brains develop a defence mechanism: we ignore anything that does not seem immediately relevant. The statistics are alarming for anyone who produces content:
60 per cent of all content are never read in full.
53 per cent of users leave a page if it takes longer than 3 seconds to load.
This means that your content isn’t just competing with your direct competitors, but with every Reel, every push notification and every distraction that’s just a swipe away.
The F-pattern: How we really read
When we visit websites, we don’t read word for word. We scan. The Nielsen Norman Group has identified this behaviour as the F-shaped pattern. It is the blueprint for how our eyes process information on a screen:
:quality(80):format(webp))
Horizontal scan (top bar): The eye moves from left to right at the top – this is where the key message needs to be.
Second horizontal scan (lower bar): A little further down, we’ll skim through a shorter line.
Vertical scan (Stem): Your gaze moves downwards along the left-hand edge to find anchor points.
What does this mean for you? If your key USP is tucked away in the bottom right-hand corner of the third paragraph, it might as well not exist for the user. In 2025, walls of text without any structure are not ‘detailed information’ – they’re revenue killers. You need to radically adapt your information architecture to user behaviour. The most important information belongs at the top and on the left. Use headlines, bullet points and visual anchors as ‘handholds’ for the scanning eye.
Visuals as a turbocharger for the brain
Why are platforms such as TikTok and Instagram Reels becoming increasingly important in the B2B sector too? Because our brains are wired for efficiency. Visual information is Processed 60,000 times faster than text.
An image, an infographic or a short video conveys emotion and information in a matter of milliseconds. Text, on the other hand, has to be decoded. In a world where people’s attention spans last just 8 seconds, ‘snackable content’ is not a passing fad, but a necessity. Your content must be presented in such a way that the core message sticks in the reader’s mind even when they’re just skimming it.
User-centred design: Relevance trumps noise
But scanability is only half the battle. Once you’ve got people’s attention, you need to hold onto it. This is where strategy comes into play. It’s not about making everything more colourful and louder. It’s about User-centred approach.
B2B buyers switch to competitors if information is not immediately available or is difficult to understand. They are looking for relevance. Personalisation is the key here:
Personalised B2B campaigns generate a A 5- to 8-fold higher ROI.
They lead to 10 per cent faster completion cycles.
Why? Because the user feels understood. They don’t have to search; they find what they’re looking for. Or rather: they are found.
Conclusion: Understanding is the first step towards conversion
We need to stop focusing solely on functionality when it comes to B2B brands. We need to build them around the experience. Good design and a clear structure aren’t just cosmetic – they’re a sign of respect for your customers’ time.
»Gutes Design lässt Menschen schneller scannen und noch schneller handeln. Verstehen ist der erste Schritt zur Conversion.«
If you want your brand not just to be seen, but also to be understood, then take a look at your touchpoints:
Does a user understand what it’s about within 3 seconds?
Do you actively guide the reader’s eye through your content (F-pattern)?
Are you making the most of the power of visuals and personalisation?
The world has changed. Your brand should too.
