Corporate Identity

Corporate identity (CI) is far more than just a logo or a style guide; it is a company’s strategically defined overall identity. It describes the sum of all the characteristics that define a brand and set it apart from others. CI aligns the company’s self-image (how the company wishes to be) with its external image (how the market perceives the company).

As a holistic management tool, corporate identity ensures that strategy, culture, behaviour and visual identity form a coherent system. It answers the fundamental question: Who are we as an organisation, and how do we consistently express this identity? The aim is to achieve a consistent overall image that builds trust, reduces complexity and secures the brand’s long-term competitive position.

The strategic imperative: identity as a driver of growth

In markets characterised by high dynamism and substitutability, a strong corporate identity acts as an anchor. For decision-makers, it is not merely an aesthetic ‘nice-to-have’, but a business necessity for ensuring future viability.

  • Efficiency in brand management: A clear identity acts as a filter for decision-making. It defines what is and isn’t in keeping with the brand, thereby preventing a strategic zigzag course.

  • Building trust: Consistency builds trust. When a brand’s message, image and actions are aligned, it is perceived as credible and reliable.

  • Differentiation: Only a clearly defined identity can set itself apart from the competition. Distinctiveness wins out; mediocrity loses out.

The four pillars of corporate identity

An effective corporate identity is only achieved through the interplay of four fundamental areas. These must mesh seamlessly to create a cohesive brand experience.

1. Corporate identity (The face of the brand)

The visual identity allows the brand to be experienced through the senses. It encompasses far more than just the logo: typography, colour schemes, visual language, grids and design principles all form a visual system.

  • Strategic benefits: Ensures instant recognition across all touchpoints.

  • Example: Lufthansa uses its iconic yellow and blue colours and the crane logo so consistently that the brand is recognised worldwide even without its name being mentioned.

2. Corporate Communication (The Voice of the Brand)

This describes the brand’s verbal identity – how the company communicates both internally and externally. The tone of voice, choice of words and style of argumentation used in advertising, PR and social media must reflect the brand’s personality.

  • Strategic benefits: Conveys the brand’s ethos and creates an emotional connection with the target audience.

  • Example: Sixt uses provocative, topical and humorous marketing that stands out clearly from its more conservative competitors.

3. Corporate Behaviour (The brand’s actions)

Behaviour is the strongest proof of identity. It is evident in the way the company interacts with customers, suppliers and staff. Does the company deliver on its promises? How does it respond to criticism? How are decisions made?

  • Strategic benefits: Validates the promises made through design and communication. Actions build credibility (‘walk the talk’).

  • Example: The Ritz-Carlton empowers every member of staff to resolve guests’ issues independently, which embodies the commitment to the highest standards of service in their conduct.

4. Corporate Culture (The soul of the brand)

Culture describes the internal value system, beliefs and the way people interact with one another. It is the invisible foundation upon which the other three pillars rest. An identity can only shine outwards if it is lived out from within.

  • Strategic benefits: Attract the right talent and ensure that staff are intrinsically motivated and feel a sense of belonging.

  • Example: Google fosters a culture of innovation and openness, which not only enables the development of new products but also underpins its external reputation as a tech pioneer.

Process: The Development of a Corporate Identity

An authentic corporate identity cannot be artificially imposed; it must be developed from the very essence of the company. The process follows a clear strategic logic: Strategy first.

Before any design or communication initiatives are developed, the strategic foundation must be in place:

  1. Analysis: Who are we? What are our strengths? Where are we heading?

  2. Positioning: How do we set ourselves apart in the market?

  3. Implementation: Translating the strategy into design, language and behavioural guidelines.

Without this strategic foundation, CI degenerates into mere window dressing with no lasting impact.

Outcome: The ROI of a clear identity

Investing in a well-defined corporate identity delivers measurable added value for a company’s development. It works in two ways:

Internal impact (Employer Branding & Performance):

  • Orientation: Provides staff with a clear guide for their day-to-day work.

  • Identification: Strengthens a sense of togetherness and loyalty, which reduces staff turnover.

  • Efficiency: Speeds up processes, as standards and values are defined.

External impact (market position & sales):

  • Brand distinctiveness: Increases visibility and brand recognition in the market.

  • Customer loyalty: Builds emotional closeness and trust through a reliable demeanour.

  • Sales support: A strong brand reduces the need to explain products and services.

  • Resilience: A strong identity helps companies weather crises more effectively, as it fosters greater trust amongst stakeholders.
