Interaction Design (IxD) defines and shapes the structure and behaviour of interactive systems. Definition

From a scientific perspective, IxD draws on insights from human-computer interaction (HCI), cognitive psychology and industrial design. According to the definition by Preece, Rogers and Sharp, Interaction Design encompasses ‘the design of interactive products to support the ways in which people communicate and interact in their daily lives and at work’. Consequently, it is not primarily about static visual design, but rather about the conception of dynamic processes, reactions and changes in state over time.
Definition and Delimitation
In order to define interaction design precisely within the context of an agency, it is necessary to distinguish it from related disciplines:
Distinction from User Experience Design (UX): UX is the overarching term that encompasses a user’s entire experience before, during and after using a product. Interaction design is a key sub-field of UX that focuses specifically on the moment of use and the mechanics of operation.
Distinction from User Interface Design (UI): Whilst UI design focuses primarily on the visual design of the interface (colours, typography, layout), interaction design defines the logic, behaviour and response of the elements. UI is the interface; IxD is the structure and workflow.
Distinction from service design: Service design focuses on the orchestration of all touchpoints (digital and physical) throughout the entire customer journey. Interaction design can form part of service design when it comes to designing specific digital touchpoints within this chain.
Historical development
The term ‘interaction design’ was largely coined in the mid-1980s by Bill Moggridge, co-founder of IDEO. He recognised that the design of software interfaces required a different approach to that of traditional industrial design for physical objects. Whilst industrial design is three-dimensional, Moggridge added ‘time’ as a fourth dimension, as interactions take place as a process.
The field gained further theoretical grounding through the work of Gillian Crampton Smith, who introduced the model of the ‘four dimensions of a language of interaction’, which was later expanded by Kevin Silver to include a fifth dimension. At the same time, ISO standards became established, in particular the ISO 9241 series (Ergonomics of Human–System Interaction), which set out normative requirements for usability and the human-centred design process.
Technical Principles / How it works
Interaction design often draws on the five-dimension model as a methodological framework, which structures the levels of an interaction:
1D: Words (Language): Text, labels and descriptions must convey information accurately without overloading the user cognitively. They form the basis of direct communication.
2D: Visual representation: Graphic elements such as icons, images and typography that signal ways to interact (affordances) (e.g. does a button look clickable?).
3D: Physical objects/space: The hardware used to interact with the system (mouse, touchscreen, VR controller), as well as the physical context of use (e.g. on the move in a noisy environment versus stationary in an office).
4D: Time: Media that change over time (animations, videos, sound). Key to this is the system’s response to user input (latency, loading bars) to communicate status changes to the user.
5D: Behaviour: The system’s response to input and the way in which the user performs actions (swiping, clicking, voice commands). This is what defines the ‘feel’ of the product.
In terms of process, IxD uses methods such as wireframing (structural design), prototyping (simulation of workflows) and usability testing to validate interaction concepts at an early stage.

Software and Web Development: Design of navigation structures, forms and application logic (SaaS, e-commerce, corporate websites).
Mobile apps: Design of gesture-based interactions and responsive behaviours on touch-screen devices.
Embedded Systems & HMI (Human Machine Interface): User interface concepts for automotive systems, industrial machinery or domestic appliances.
Spatial Computing & XR: Designing interactions in three-dimensional virtual space (AR/VR), independent of traditional screens.

Brand trust: A consistent, predictable user experience builds trust in the brand. Faulty or illogical interactions (broken promises) directly damage brand perception.
