User Research

User research refers to the systematic collection and analysis of data about users, their needs, behaviours and motivations in the context of their interaction with products, services or systems. As an integral part of strategic design and development processes, user research serves as the empirical foundation for evidence-based decisions. It serves to minimise development risks by validating assumptions and ensures that solutions are not only technically feasible and economically viable, but are primarily geared towards the actual requirements of the target group.

Definition

User research is defined as the methodical process of gathering insights into a system’s user group in order to inform design and product decisions. Within the framework of Human-Centred Design (HCD) as defined by ISO 9241-210, user research forms the basis for understanding the context of use. This encompasses the users, their tasks, their equipment (hardware, software) and the physical and social environment in which the product is used.

Unlike design approaches driven purely by intuition, user research requires a structured approach that combines qualitative and quantitative methods to identify usage patterns and optimise usability and the user experience.

A clear distinction between user research and related disciplines is essential for strategic understanding.

Distinction from market research

Whilst traditional market research concentrates primarily on purchasing behaviour, market share, price sensitivity and demographic segmentation (focusing on the buyer and the market), user research focuses on actual usage behaviour, interaction with the product and the underlying mental models (focusing on the user and the context). Market research asks who buys a product and how many potential customers there are; user research asks how and why a product is used.

Methodological dimensions

User research can be categorised along two main axes:

  1. Attitudinal vs. Behavioural: This distinction separates methods that capture what people say (attitudinal, e.g. interviews, surveys) from methods that observe what people actually do (behavioural, e.g. usability tests, A/B testing, eye-tracking). As there are often discrepancies between stated attitudes and actual behaviour, observing behaviour is generally regarded as a more valid indicator of usability problems.

  2. Qualitative vs. Quantitative: Qualitative research (e.g. ethnographic field studies) aims to understand causes and motivations (“Why does something happen?”) and provides in-depth insights from smaller sample sizes. Quantitative research (e.g. analytics, standardised surveys) focuses on measurable, statistically significant data (“How many/how often does something happen?”) and validates hypotheses using large sample sizes.

Historical development

The roots of user research lie in ergonomics and human factors, which gained in importance during and after the Second World War as a means of improving the efficiency and safety of technical systems. In the 1970s and 1980s, with the advent of personal computers, the field of Human–Computer Interaction (HCI) developed. The focus shifted increasingly from purely physical ergonomics towards cognitive processes and software usability.

With the introduction of ISO 13407 in 1999 (later superseded by ISO 9241-210 in 2010), the principles of human-centred design were formalised. These standards established the need to explicitly involve users in the development process, thereby elevating user research from an optional add-on to a normative requirement in system development.

Technical Principles / How it works

The operational process of user research is usually divided into two phases, each of which requires a different methodological approach:

Generative research (Discovery)

At this early stage, the aim is to explore the problem space. The objective is to identify unknown needs and generate hypotheses for solutions. Typical methods include:

  • In-depth interviews: Structured interviews to identify attitudes and mental models.

  • Contextual interviews (Contextual Inquiry): Observing and interviewing users in their natural environment in order to gain a realistic understanding of workflows and disruptive factors.

  • Diary Studies: Long-term studies in which users record their interactions and feelings over a period of time.

Evaluative research (validation)

Once design solutions or prototypes are in place, this phase serves to assess usability and validate hypotheses. Typical methods include:

  • Usability testing (moderated/unmoderated): Observing users as they carry out specific tasks on the system in order to identify areas of friction.

  • Tree Testing / Card Sorting: Methods for validating and optimising information architecture.

  • A/B testing: A quantitative comparison of two variants to identify the more efficient solution.

Ideally, the integration of these methods follows an iterative cycle: research findings are incorporated into the design, which is then tested again.

Relevance and significance

The strategic importance of user research stems from the direct correlation between understanding users and product success.

Economic efficiency

By identifying user needs and usability issues at an early stage, undesirable developments can be avoided. Changes made during the design phase are many times more cost-effective than corrections made after implementation or market launch (Cost of Change Curve).

Brand resonance and loyalty

Products that offer intuitive usability and relevant solutions to problems strengthen brand perception. In the context of Customer-Based Brand Equity (CBBE), a positive user experience contributes significantly to customer satisfaction and long-term loyalty.

Objectification of decisions

User research transforms subjective opinions and internal assumptions into data-driven facts. This streamlines the decision-making process within stakeholder groups and focuses the discussion on verifiable user requirements rather than personal preferences.

In an increasingly digitalised economy, user research is an essential prerequisite for creating relevant, efficient and satisfactory systems.
